Matthew Cerny (Seniors c/0 2014)
I like AVID because it connects students with opportunities. My hobbies are diving, cooking, and learning swaddling techniques. My son Mac was born on August 13th 2011. I have been a Kekaulike teacher for 4 years. I attended Columbia University and Loyola University. My advice for college is to take an extra class each semester and get enought sleep.
Jan Matsushita (Juniors c/o 2015)
I am excited to be working with this fun and diverse group of students. The are slowly getting better at taking Cornell notes and organizing their 3-inch binders.
My hobbies are traveling, crafting, and solving puzzles.
I have been teaching at King Kekaulike High School for 14 years. I graduated from the University of Puget Sound [BA] and the University of Hawaii [MA].
My advice for college-bound students is "Keep you eyes on the prize!"

Brandi Spalding (Sophomores c/o 2016)
High School: St. Anthony High School
UH Manoa: B.Ed in Secondary Education with a minor in History
UH Manoa: M.Ed in Curriculum Instruction
National Board Certified Teacher in Social Studies
Why I teach AVID: I truly feel that all high school students should have the opportunity and the skills that they need to go to college, if they choose to do so. College is where I grew up, where I learned a lot about what I wanted in life and how to achieve my goals. Going to college was one of the most important experiences of my life and I want to encourage and to help students have that same experience!
Hobbies: Reading historical novels, traveling, watching movies, going out to eat, cleaning my house and spending time with my family!
Interests: Anything that deals with the history of a place or person really interests me. Also, continuing my education is very important!

I'm proud to say that I am a KKHS alumnus c/o 2003. I've been teaching at KKHS for 5 years. I like the AVID program because it gives students who have determination a chance to attend and succeed in college and life. My hobbies are working out, paddle boarding, cooking, eating, and reading baby books.
My daughter Taylor was born on June 13th, 2011.
I attended Saint Martins University and the University of Hawaii at Manoa. I have Bachelors in Education in Secondary Education in General Science and a Masters in Education in Educational Technology. Someone once told me " You are on your way to something new and challenging. Always remember to have fun but at the same time you must get that paper. Don't forget about that paper. That paper is your ticket to your future."
